Uptown, downtown and borough directions
In Manhattan, uptown generally means north and downtown means south. Trains may also be labelled by their final borough or terminal, such as Brooklyn-bound or Queens-bound.
Some station entrances lead to only one platform. Read the sign above the stairs before tapping, especially at smaller local stations where changing direction may require leaving and paying again.
What is the difference between local and express trains?
Local trains stop at every station on their route. Express trains skip selected stations. A faster-looking express is useful only if it stops where you need to get off.
Maps mark express stops differently, but live service can change. Check the platform display and listen to announcements before boarding.
Follow the letter or number, not only the colour
Several services share the same colour because they use the same Manhattan trunk line. They can separate later and stop at different stations. The A, C and E are all blue, for example, but they are not interchangeable.
How do subway transfers work?
Transfers between subway lines inside the same station complex are included. Follow signs without exiting through a turnstile. Eligible subway-to-local-bus transfers are also included when you use the same payment method.
Can you use the subway from the airport?
JFK connects to the subway through AirTrain, which has a separate fare. LaGuardia connects by bus to subway stations. Newark Airport uses New Jersey transport and is not part of the NYC subway system.
